Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an approach aimed at addressing dysfunctional emotions, behaviours and cognitions through a solution focussed methodology. CBT addresses the here and now difficulties experienced by tackling thinking, cognition, feeling, somatic and behavioural aspects of our presenting problems to identify and understand how these are impinging on our daily quality of life. Raising awareness and taking responsibility for our part in perpetuating and maintaining this cycle is a further part of the work.

CBT is useful for more directly addressing issues such as anxiety, phobias, stress, panic attacks, low self esteem, motivational blocks and anger. Homework tasks can be a normal part of the work including diary keeping of significant events and associated feelings, thoughts and behaviours; questioning and testing unhelpful and unrealistic thoughts, assumptions and beliefs; testing out new ways of behaving and reacting in the world and progressively confronting anxiety causing activities which may previously have been avoided.
