Existential Therapy
Being human entails facing a life that inevitably presents us with struggles, conflicts and dilemmas that make us question our humanity and the meaning of life. There are some fixed givens and inevitabilities which form part of the tapestry of life experience and are inherent in our existence. The conflicts arising from life crises, failures, challenges and ultimately death, can cause anxiety. Under all the everyday problems we have to contend with, there are four underlying, primary existential concerns in life: death, freedom, isolation and meaninglessness whilst despair, loneliness and anxiety also play their part.
Rooted in philosophy and a search for a meaningful existence, Existential Therapy confronts our inner conflicts with regard to these four concerns and how we may be setting up maladaptive defenses and strategies for avoidance in relation to these. This therapeutic approach is orientated towards deep inner exploration and understanding of the negative repercussions these blocks can have in engaging with life with a greater sense of vitality, freedom and spontaneity.
